Coxheath Hills Wilderness Trail
The Coxheath Hills Wilderness Trail is a great example of how a community group effort saved a pristine woodland, which now provides a stunning recreation resource and is a focal point to the community of Coxheath.
More:
Our Coxheath community has already had to face potential environmentally damaging proposals in the past. In 2004, the residents came together to oppose a proposed rock quarry in the Coxheath hills area. Through a cooperative effort involving residents from all walks of life, opposition to the quarry/mine grew. For example, at one meeting held at the County Rink in Coxheath there were over 350 people in attendance to oppose a quarry/mine in the Coxheath hills. The residents of Coxheath proved that a breath-taking trail system was the desired vision for the land and the community. The initial quarry developer also established a quarry elsewhere, outside of Coxheath, in a more appropriate, remote location.
Today, the over 10 km trail system has proven its’ goal of enhancing the understanding of nature through wilderness experiences. The trail is truly an expression of the spirit of the Coxheath community. Hundreds of people and groups have both worked and volunteered on the trail over the years.
What the Coxheath Hills Trail has done for the community and our Island:
- Employment of local residents for trail maintenance.
- Worked with Katimavik and other organizations to provide opportunities for youth
- Opportunity for outdoor recreation – hiking, running, cross country skiing, snowshoeing.
- Pre Covid – Hosted cruise ship visitors (and hopefully again in the future).
- Numerous events including - Celtic Colours International Festival (300 + people in just one day), cross country running races, dessert socials, spring clean ups, wilderness overnight stays in the cabin.
- The Trails continue to host local schools, organizations, and tourists from Canada and around the world – The cabin guest books shows visitors from hundreds of countries around the world with thousands of tourists and visitors hiking and exploring the Trail each year.
